If your going to get anywhere worthwhile, you need to have some idea of where you are heading.
Life's too short to leave your destinations to chance. You need to have your goal.
Be it a business/work target or a life's ambition, to get what you want, you need to 'Set your Target' and get on with it!
'Set Target' is the 's-t.' of the 'st-ride4' creativity tool.
'Set Target' is fundamentally the same as the vast majority of problem solving and personal progression methods out there in that they typically start with setting the goal for the task at hand.
Here are 4 target setting rules of thumb to get you started stride4ing ..And by the way, you will find a lot of 4's on this site after all it is stride4 ! ;-)
1. Write it down .... committing to paper makes it more real and the act of choosing the words gets you thinking more about what your target really is.
2. Tune into both the big picture and the small picture. Many goal setting guides advise 'be specific'. By being specific you give your self something specific you can get your teeth stuck into. But stride4 is a creative thinking tool. If you get too specific too soon you may limit your scope for creative solutions. So when setting your target remember to also stand back and think of the bigger picture. One way of doing this when writing down you goal is to write it in the terms of "achieve this specific goal so that I can achieve this higher level, bigger picture goal".
3. Be specific in your timescales. This is where you always need to be specific.
4. Create a family of targets. To progress on your journey to your goal you take many steps / strides. By splitting a task into enough simple steps they build to bring you to your destination. Some or the steps can be steps looking at the big picture and some concentrating on the fine detail. Together the steps build to an overall goal. You achieve your target.
So, in summary... set your targets well and you will then give your self great potential for heading towards and getting to your worthwhile destinations. Be specific when writing down your targets to give yourself much more potential to get your teeth in and make progress. But remember to include the 'big picture' in your written down target to give your self more later scope for fresh ideas.
In step 2 of the tutorial, I will be exploring with you the next stage, the reality check. ..... the 'R' of ST R I DE4. The reality check can be used to further build on the set target step and lead to further more targeted ideas which are more likely to be in tune with the real reality.
